How to read a phylogenetic tree
- Each bubble represents a cetacean species.
- Hover and click on a species to learn more about them!
- A node between two species represents a genetic divergence between them.
- The longer the line between two species, the more genetically different they are.
- Find the red node: this is the Crown Cetacea, the oldest common ancestor of all cetaceans.
- Biologically similar species may belong to the same Genus (small group of species) or to the same Family (bigger group of species).
- Images with the same color outline belong to the same family.
- QUIZZ! Find the name of the biggest and the smallest(s) families of this tree!
